Fonts

Details
18 October 2013

The font on a webpage is an extremely important part of the overall design. The font you use has to be clear and easy to read and it has to match the tone of the rest of the page. Fonts are often overlooked by clients reviewing the design of their website though, because when you visit a webpage you don't normally consciously register what font's being used unless it's the wrong one.

In the past, you were extremely limited as to what fonts you could use on your website. Coding was only compatible with a select few typefaces, and as such a lot of the earlier websites had a similar look and feel. Now, there are hundreds of different types of fonts available, and while it can be a bit tricky to know which one you should use it's definitely worth taking the time to try a couple out. Even if you test different fonts in the mock up stage, it can help you get a grasp on what works and what just looks silly.

Generally, you should stick to clear, simple typefaces, such as Calibri or Helvetica. Times New Roman is generally left to school projects. Stay away from gibberish fonts like Wingdings, and no one will take you seriously if your website is in Comic Sans.

If you'd like to, you can even go the extra mile and create a customisable font especially for your business and brand. If you choose this option when someone visits your site the font set is downloaded from your web server to be displayed in their browser.

For a humorous insight into what tones are associated with which fonts, watch the video below by CollegeHumor, where personified fonts meet at a conference.
