Well what a start to the new year!
During the break a few of our clients had their website’s compromised (due to not having an updated CMS) which allowed remote users/bots to add additional files and code to their sites. This code then sent out spam emails using our server; unfortunately due to the minimal hours of operation the issue was only discovered after thousands of emails had already been sent. The offending users sites have been cleaned and updated and are now running the latest versions of their CMS releases.
This issue could have been avoided if all our clients ensure they are running the latest version of their corresponding systems and components. We are happy to manage this for you from as little as $75 per/mth*. Conditions Apply.
Monitoring systems
Another method of ensuring your site hasn’t been compromised is to use a file monitoring system. We are currently using and recommending to our Joomla clients the Eyesite component. This is a great little component that stores information about the files within your site, including: size, creation and modified dates. Then every time it runs, if there is a difference or change the information is displayed for you to either approve or reject. Making it easy to identify any files added to your domain without your consent.
If you are also hosted on a compatible server you can set-up a Cron job to run the Eyesite scan automatically and then email you the results. A fantastic feature if you don’t log into your site every couple of days or weeks. Click the following link to find out more: Eyesite
Although this component is no longer listed within the JED system, this component gets 5 out of 5 stars from the Team at Rhye Media!
As we bring more and more clients over to our new server and continue to provide hosting and online services we would like to remind all clients to use the User Support section and Report an Issue or simply ask a question. This system is monitored 24hrs a day 7 days a week and should be your first port of call if you need to reach us.
As covered in our previous news article our regular writer and social media commentator is currently filling a role in the US but we will continue to try and keep your news posts informative and as regular as possible.
If you have any queries or concerns please get in touch! You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+, or you can create a ticket with our User Support system.
