Melting, sticky, exhausted, sleep deprived and over it! These are just a few choice words to describe how we are feeling in the South Eastern parts of Australia. 150 year old local records broken and we’re still waiting for the long awaited cool change. Almost 45C degrees outside right now!
As we have been sitting in our offices sweating it out over a keyboard and mouse, or standing around the water cooler saying “how about this heat?” this week, let our thoughts go out to the men and women in the local and interstate fire fighting, police and ambulances teams. They are at the coalface of these extreme conditions helping and serving our towns and communities. We say a big Thanks!
On a side note; have you given any thought to your hardware and devices? The extreme temperatures can easily kill your equipment, not just by the fact that it is so HOT. But also by power outages and fluctuation (brown outs). Even leaving a device that is turned off in these conditions can have an effect. We had a digital camera that was left in a room in full sunlight on another hot day and the temperature softened the solder inside the case; this then turned the device into an expensive paper weight.
Last night our home satellite receiver locked up and became non responsive due the inside temperature (no sun required). A full reset and a small fan blowing air directly onto the unit was the only way to keep it from going into complete melt-down.
So look after yourself, children and pets and ensure you keep hydrated and as cool as possible, but also consider your electronic devices and the environment by turning things off, unpluging them and by placing them out of the sun.
Until next time; stay cool!
